What a rough stone is — and what it isn’t

Rough (or raw) stones are natural crystals that have not been cut or polished. They keep their original crystal faces, colour zones and inclusions. That is the appeal: no two pieces are alike, and nothing is hidden by a polish.

Rough is not the same as tumbled. Tumbled stones have been rounded in a drum with grit; rough pieces are left as found, sometimes lightly cleaned of clay.

Why buy rough instead of cut

  • Price per carat — cutting removes 50–70% of a crystal’s weight, so rough gives you far more stone for the money.
  • Honesty — colour and clarity are on full view. Treatments are rare in rough because they are usually applied after cutting.
  • Use — for display, collecting, meditation or crystal work, the natural form is the point. For cutting, you choose exactly the piece you want.

How to read weight, size and grade

We list rough by exact carat weight (or grams for large pieces) and by millimetre dimensions, measured piece by piece. Photos are of the actual stone under daylight, so the colour you see is real. A few words describe the grade honestly — “clean, gem-quality” or “display grade with surface pits” — so you can decide with no surprises.

Rough stones we stock

Most of our rough is red garnet (deep red almandine and pyrope crystals — read how rough red garnet forms in nature), plus amethyst points and clusters, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, labradorite, tiger eye and sodalite. Stock changes weekly because every piece sells once. If you want a specific stone, message us and we will find it.

Cutting or tumbling your rough

If you plan to have a piece cut, tell us — we will point you to material with clean areas and good colour zoning, and can arrange cutting in Dubai. For tumbling, harder stones (garnet, quartz, agate, jasper) give the best finish; softer ones (fluorite, apatite) scratch easily and are better kept rough.

Care and display

Rinse with room-temperature water only; no chemicals. Keep water-sensitive stones (selenite, halite) dry. Store pieces separately — a garnet will scratch fluorite. Sunlight fades amethyst and rose quartz slowly, so display them away from a window.

Crystal meanings are cultural traditions and are shared as such; they are not medical advice. For gem facts we follow the GIA gem encyclopedia. Looking for cut stones instead? Start with natural topaz or the full gemstone list.
