How to choose a natural gemstone

Four numbers tell you almost everything. Every listing shows them, so you can compare stones the way a dealer does:

  • Carat weight — how heavy the stone is. One carat is 0.2 grams; it is what you pay for.
  • Size in millimetres — how big it looks in a setting. Two stones with the same weight can look very different in size.
  • Shape — oval, round, pear, cushion. Use the filter to see only the shape you want.
  • Treatment — natural doesn’t always mean untreated. Sky blue topaz gets its colour from irradiation and heating; garnet and turquoise here are untreated. We state what we know on every listing, as the GIA recommends.
